Love You Alotl

This adorable little marshmallow is Rosemary (Rosie for short), the axolotl! She's here to let that special someone know you love them alotl. Whether for Valentine's Day or just because, Rosie is sure to brighten up their day!

The word “axolotl” is thought to translate to “water monster” in an ancient Aztec language; plus legend says they are the Aztec god of fire and lightning, Xolotl, in disguise… we suspect the Aztec community never actually saw the goofy looking axolotl in real life! Unlike most salamanders, an axolotl never goes through the metamorphosis phase. They look a little like a cross between an underdeveloped lizard and an overdeveloped tadpole.

On top of this, their method of eating is similar to that of a hoover, inhaling crustaceans, mollusks, insect eggs and small fish. When they’re newly hatched, they even eat their siblings' limbs. They won’t be grounded though, as they’re on their own from conception and the limb will just grow back anyway! So there. It’s their quirky nature that makes them highly popular pets, and yet their wild counterparts are critically endangered due to habitat degradation, as little as 50-1000 found in the still water lake Xochimilco in Mexico.

Darcy and Luna Designs was born after our founder and artist, Milly, lost her two beloved guinea pigs. They were her friends when she was lonely, her entertainment when she was sad, her reason to get up when she just wanted to stay in bed. If this wasn’t reason enough, then the fact that guinea pigs are the most underrated pet is!

This made her think - what other underrated animals are out there? Darcy and Luna Designs is all about paying homage to those animals that are just as adorable as dogs, elephants, hedgehogs and donkeys, just a little more… alternative!
