Collection: Penny's Pigeon Aid
The pigeon is the world’s oldest domesticated bird, with research putting domestication at roughly 10,000 years ago. They have always held historical importance to humans as food, pets, holy animals and messengers, and can be seen on Mesopotamian tablets and Egyptian hieroglyphics. Due to their homing ability, they were also used in both world wars to deliver vital messages.
Despite this, city pigeons (feral birds that have been released by humans) are generally seen as pests. They are considered invasive despite the positive impact they have on wild bird populations, serving as an important prey species for birds of prey. What people don’t acknowledge is that they are incredibly intelligent, able to read the alphabet, conduct simple maths, recognise their own ref lection, read f lash cards, detect disease and provide key indicators to changes in the environment. And despite false publicity, pigeons love nothing more than to keep themselves clean with a good bath!
