When naturalists first came across the platypus in Eastern Australia, they thought it was a hoax. A mammal that lays eggs, has a venomous spike, lives both in and out of water, has a bill like a duck, a tail like a beaver and a body like an otter… They walk on their knuckles to protect webbed feet when on land, can growl like a puppy and are active during the day or night depending on the weather. You can understand why they didn’t believe such a creature could exist. What’s next, unicorns?

What’s more is that the platypus is so solitary that they will actively avoid another platypus by feeding at different times of day, because when they’re not spending 10-12 hours hunting for worms and shrimp, they are in their burrows. This species wins at being an introvert.

Darcy and Luna Designs was born after our founder and artist, Milly, lost her two beloved guinea pigs. They were her friends when she was lonely, her entertainment when she was sad, her reason to get up when she just wanted to stay in bed. If this wasn’t reason enough, then the fact that guinea pigs are the most underrated pet is!

This made her think - what other underrated animals are out there? Darcy and Luna Designs is all about paying homage to those animals that are just as adorable as dogs, elephants, hedgehogs and donkeys, just a little more… alternative!
