Native to South American forests, these prickly fellows spend the majority of their time in trees, where their prehensile tail comes in handy and allows them to cling, climb and hang from the branches. Half composed of muscle, the tail is almost as long as their bodies.
Pehaps one of their most adorable traits, aside from having the most boopable nose in the animal kingdom, is their tendancy to stamp their feet when they're excited. Prehensile tailed porcupines are nocturnal, so when they're not scampering through the treetops they spend their nights foraging for leaves, flowers, shoots and roots, or munching on the cambium layer found beneath the bark of some trees.
They tend to spend time alone or in pairs, and can live for 12-17 years in the wild. When threatened, they will curl up into a ball to expose their sharp spines and protect their soft underbellies.
As we mentioned before, they have an incredibly boopable nose - it's abnormally large so gives them an excellent sense of smell and helps them find food... and look adorable.
I think it's safe to say these guys are prickly but cute! Check out our Prehensile Tailed Porcupine products below.
